Why I Don't Like PRS Guitars 🎸SE Soapbar II Review
This week I put my prejudices aside and give this divisive brand another chance. The 2005 PRS SE Soapbar II looks like my kind of jam so maybe this is what I've been missing? Let's take a close-up look and listen and see if this one gets my mojo working! 😁🎸

I have a 2007 one of these with HB instead of P90. Superbly made, feels good, sounds great, sets up well. But like you I would rather play my Tele, strange phenomenon but 100% true.

You’ve invented a new measuring tool. The fat chin test 😂🤣 My Solar E1.6 which is the explorer shaped one ? Fat chin is over fret 22. I love playing that sitting downn for such an aggressive looking guitar it plays cleans nicely. The GC1.6, the single cut fat chin test is around fret 18. PRS SE Tremonti is 14 or 15. My Solar S1.6 and A1.6 are around 18th fret. My Ibanez Pia also around 18. And my Strat is also 18. Cool. I liked the sound of your review guitar. Interesting. Anyway I’ve got my prostate cancer biopsy on July 9th. My life is in hold until I get the results. Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘

Thing is about PRS is that they’re completely soulless-they sound flat, just. Can’t explain it- I’ve had two-too of the range custom 24’s. I wanted something different, it’s different-but that’s about it.

I have looked at PRS guitars over the years although never bought one. In fact the only PRS I have really played I suspect was actually a Chinese fake. It looked the part but didn’t feel right to me. One thing you know about PRS is the build quality will be there, but that guitar was lacking. Nevertheless, if my local shop had one of these for £300+ I would definitely take a punt on it.

Your epiphany is spot on. I find some guitars more comfortable to play than others. Your explanation of looking down and where your hand can reach the neck is excellent. Ernie Ball Sack strings? Never heard of this series! 😂🤣 PRS proprietary tone foam? I think you are on to something! 😂🤣

I don’t like PRSes either but I wouldn’t put them in the “pointy guitar” category like Jacksons and Charvels. They were never trying to be one of those, they were aiming to be an old school Gibson alternative since their debut. Much different spirit/intent from the 80s pointy guitar hair metal stuff.

  • @ThePedroDB
    @ThePedroDB 10 годин тому

So, you don't like the PRS headstock shape. Whilst I wouldn't agree that it is 'pointy' I do understand the problem. I'll never own a Fender Telecaster because I can't stand the shape of the headstock. A Strat headstock on a Tele body would be sooo much better. As for the "Fat Chin Test" / seated playing position, I doubt there's much in it between all examples apart from the SG because almost the complete fretboard is proud of the body - hence the 'neck dive issue'. If you feel most comfortable with SGs then that's all that matters. I own a couple of PRS Santana SEs and they are very pretty and play well enough but I don't pick them up very often. Maybe I should sell them and be done with it. I've decided that the Ibanez Jem is the guitar that suits me best and, yes, it may be because of it's general 'mojo'/appearance. I'm not a huge Steve Vai but I do love his guitars.

Well you’re right. Prs wasn’t there when the music was happening. Prs will never get over that. When the party ended prs popped its head round the door and said “ hey I’m here!” Everyone at the party said “ we’re all off to bed” “ you’re 40 years too late mate” “ shut the door when you leave” A local guitar builder once said to me “ it’s a great piece of furniture to hang on the wall” “ it’s for bankers and accounts really mate”

Nice review Colin. Have you tried playing in the "classical" position, ie resting the guitar on your left leg? I always play this way and it's so much better for me for all guitars. It also puts the guitar in the same sort of position as if you were standing. Try it! Cheers.

I don’t hate PRS, but they don’t do much for me. Yes they seem to be well made, and the ones I have played were well made. Some of them look great. Maybe it’s the necks or the scale length or radius or something else? They aren’t bad. If a PRS was my only option I’d play one,. Each of the guitars I have all spoke to me in some way. When I picked them up and played them, something about them drew me in and I knew they were coming home with me. PRS? Didn’t happen. Including higher end ones. Maybe there’s one out there that would do that for me. Who knows? If you like them, cool. Play what you like.

  • @poncie17

You've definitely got a point with PRS lacking mojo, i know they are well made and play well, but something about their vibe is off. For me, it is the headstock shape that really throws me off. They have so many good features that i would want, but if the guitar itself doesnt look cool to me or match the kind of aesthetic i want (from body all the way up to the headstock) then that is almost like a roadblock of getting into the mojo.

Maybe you should try the NF53, the proper "T style" of PRS, might change your mind, who knows 😉. I personally use a SE CE 24 as a working tool and it is the best guitar I own in that price tier. The only thing I dislike are those "low friction pots", it just feels weird. But I would say that, indeed, the so called mojo is not really there, just lacking some soul or spirit. But you know, for home used workout session it is my go to. Once again thanks for this video. You are my UA-cam's gem. Hope to see more soon. Have a great day!

  • @Trial212

Hey Colin, The fat chin test works for your SG's, that's great. To get those other guitars to be much more playable, I'd suggest going to what I've been told is the "classical style" of holding a guitar. Which is to say get the body of a Les Paul, or SG, ES, Strat, Tele etc... in between your legs. Elevate the left foot (to keep the guitar from sliding) and rest that bottom cutaway on you LEFT leg, not the right. Bingo!! Instant struggle free access to frets 16-22 or 24!!. Personally, I don't see how anyone plays, holding the guitar the way you and a million other fellows (I'm a Yank) do!! I use that "position" for all my playing. Hell, you can even make a Flying V sorta comfortable 🙂. That's my 2 cents for what their worth.....Keep up the great work!! CHEERS!! Bryan

Colin, .. thanks for bringing the nuances, that I wouldn't have considered, .. like the middle fret location thing. And, this just one example, of course. We may have different tolerance levels, to certain aspects of an instrument .. but, if we're not even looking for different characteristics, when considering a purchase .. not good, is it.

I'm not generally a fan of PRS guitars. The neck shapes don't do it for me. I've only ever owned SE models, and that was years ago. First a Santana SE (first series). Then a Soapbar SE (also first series). Meh. But I bought a DGT SE last year, and love it. The neck shape is closer to the Gibson's I love. The pickups are very good, and the trem is super stable compared to Bigsby's and Strats. I put the SE locking tuners on it, not because the stock tuners were a problem - they weren't. But I am a tinkerer, and the locking tuners weren't expensive. So why not?

A month ago i had played a PRS SE Starla, i must say that i loved how lightweight it was and the pickups sounded fantastic, kind of their own version of 60's Gibson T-Tops or Guild HB-1s, but the neck was the problem for me, because even if it was a C shaped one, it was too fat for my left hand, so it wasn't a very comfortable experience to play it, and the same day i played a Kim Thayil signature Guild Polara and i loved it, as i'm an SG fan and i love how Guild humbuckers (both full sized and mini sized) sound, it definitely convinced me, also it was very lightweight and the neck was a pleasure to play, the D profile is definitely my favourite shape, slim and flat.
